In the midst of the turmoil of the American Revolution, a small group of patriots from New York and Connecticut committed themselves to serving the colonial cause by joining a nascent espionage network that would come to be known as the Culper Ring. They gathered critical information on British military movements and delivered encrypted reports to George Washington and the Continental Army. The Culper Ring’s code used numbers to represent people and places. 711 stood for George Washington, 727 for New York City, and 729 for Setauket, a town on the north shore of Long Island in New York, where the core members of the network resided. One of the earliest examples of intelligence gathering in American history, the Culper Ring is a symbol of our national legacy of ingenuity, skill, and innovation in the intelligence realm. The Setauket Company strives to embody those same qualities today as we serve the intelligence and defense communities. For that reason, in 2006 our company founders -- themselves both native New Englanders -- chose the name “Setauket” and included the code “729” in our logo as an enduring reminder of that legacy.
